When is Pancake Day in 2018?

Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday (also Mardi Gras), is on Tuesday 13th February 2018.

Why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

The day before Ash Wednesday, Shrove Tuesday, Christians went to confession to be ‘shriven’ of their sins. Shrove Tuesday quickly became known as a Pancake Day as, traditionally, the eggs and fats that weren’t eaten during Lent – 40 days of fasting in the Christian calendar – were perfect base ingredients for pancakes.

How to Make Pancakes from Scratch

Make pancakes from scratch for four people in around 15 minutes with:

  • 100g plain flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 300ml milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Pinch of salt

Method

Put all ingredients in a mixing bowl or jug and then whisk until a smooth batter is formed.

Set a lightly oil-wiped medium-sized frying pan on a medium heat. When hot, pour mixture into pan to desired size. Cook for 60 seconds or until golden on each side, making sure to give your flipping skills some air time!

Serve with your favourite filling, or, as per British tradition, a squeeze of lemon!
