Way back before Raquel Welch was flouncing around in a fur bikini, there lurked an amazing three-eyed fish! Thanks to the marvels of nature, this bizarre creature was able to survive vast periods of time in suspended animation, and so it's still around today. 200 million years of hanging around doesn't seem to have done these strange creatures any harm, and now you can hatch and grow them at home! In the right conditions (keep em warmish) you can hatch these frenzied swimmers in as little as 24 hours (may take up to two weeks in colder temperatures). They are predatory and carnivorous and will eating anything else in the tank (including each other!) and can double in size each day until they reach their adult length of about 2 inches. They are fully mature after 3-4 weeks and have a typical lifespan of between 20 and 70 days (If they manage to avoid other hungry Triops). The Starter Kit comes with a small plastic dish, 30-50 Cultured Triops Eggs, food, a thermometer strip and a small amount of gravel. The Triassic Triops Kit comes with a mini aquarium, 30-50 Cultured Triops Eggs, food, gravel, thermometer, magnifier (for checking them out), full instructions and an information booklet, and even a little replica Triops fossil. Bring the past back to life with these awesome pre-historic pets.

Triops info for the inquisitive:
Triops Triops are crustaceans that look like miniature horseshoe crabs. Triops have a relatively short lifespan of 20 to 90 days and grow quickly to their adult length of one to three inches. How large they grow depends on the amount of light and food they receive. After hatching, they often double in size daily! The bright colors of the Triops are due to hemoglobin in the blood and a dark blue-green pigment in the connective tissue. They are called branchiopods (gill foot) because they obtain oxygen from the water through their feet. The young quickly move through several larval stages, shedding (molting) their exoskeletons each time. Adults can complete their life cycle in under 30 days. Triops are usually in constant motion and have entertaining feeding and breathing patterns that include amazing acrobatics & upside-down swimming. While swimming on its back, the Triops is able to sweep food into its mouth by using its many legs.

Your Triops eggs were raised on special aquatic farms, but in nature they inhabit temporary ponds all over the world. These ponds usually dry up during certain times of the year when there is no rainfall (go figure). Although the adult Triops die during these droughts, the embryos remain in a state of diapause until the rains return and fill up the temporary ponds once again, making it safe for them to hatch. Triops grow in many parts of the world, including: Japan, Russia, western North America, Africa, Australia, and, more infrequently, in Central and South America, the West Indies, Hawaii, New Caledonia, the Galapagos Islands and India.
