Join the team at Dartmoor Zoo with this Keeper for the Day with Lunch for Two. You’ll spend the day with the experts, caring for a wide variety of species. Learn about animal diet and nutrition, husbandry, and the fascinating training and enrichment programmes that keep the animals healthy and happy.

Prepare for a very hands-on experience, with a bit of hard work too! You’ll have plenty of fantastic photo opportunities, and as part of your day you can enjoy lunch in the Jaguar Restaurant together, as well as taking a certificate of your achievement home.

What happens on the day?

On arrival at Dartmoor Zoo you’ll meet the expert zoo team that you’ll be joining for the day. The two of you will be getting hands-on with a range of fascinating species, learning all about what goes on in the day-to-day workings of the zoo.

You’ll be involved in feeding and care, and enjoy plenty of photo opportunities throughout. As part of your day you’ll enjoy lunch in the Jaguar Restaurant, and at the end of your experience you’ll receive a certificate of achievement to take home.

Participant guidelines

  • Minimum age: 16
  • The experience is not recommended for anyone who is pregnant, has a high blood pressure, or is of a nervous disposition
  • While nearly all of the zoo is accessible to wheelchairs and buggies, it is quite hilly and rugged and some of the paths are challenging. Caution should be exercised, and the team is ready to help when you need: just ask. High heels are inadvisable
  • The experience content, equipment used and restrictions may vary

Availability

  • Vouchers will be 9 months from the date of issue
  • The experience is available from 11.00 to 16.00 on selected weekdays and weekends throughout the year.
  • We recommend you book at least three months in advance to ensure that dates are available. Demand is high and places are strictly limited, so you're advised to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. All bookings are subject to availability.
  • Please allow 5 hours for the experience.
  • All Experiences are booked on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Your Experience involves working environments. On rare occasions unforeseen circumstances may necessitate postponement of your Experience at short notice. In this event you will be contacted via email or phone as soon as possible. We recommend that you check your messages and emails regularly before your visit in case they have contacted you.

What should I wear?

Please wear comfortable, warm, waterproof clothing and shoes. You will get dirty. Wellington boots are recommended.

What about the weather?

This experience can be conducted in any weather.

Additional information

You will be allowed to take photographs, but only at the discretion of the zoo staff.

During the experience, instructions by zoo staff must be followed at all times and participation is allowed only on your acceptance of the strict health and safety requirements which you'll be required to sign on the day.

Please note that this experience is subject to availability, conditions and animal welfare considerations.

What about insurance?

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.

How it works

All you have to do is pay for the experience you wish to purchase and we’ll send a voucher and booking information to you or directly to the recipient, then you just need to check the info and book your experience.
