Some games are just inherently addictive, and Bananagrams is a class A addictive game. You have been warned. Sounding not a little unlike a fruity stripper, Bananagrams is a highly portable heaven for wordsmiths.

We're not too sure why the game is called Bananagrams. It does come in a quirky banana shaped bag but it is doesn't have an awful lot to do with anagrams. It is however a superb game, and anyone with a love of Speed Scrabble (without the playing board) will adore Bananagrams. The zippered banana skin contains 144 letter squares and the game can be played by just yourself, or up to eight players.

First you tip out all the letters and turn them face down, then each player takes 21 tiles leaving the remainder in a pile in the middle. Shout 'Split' (don't forget the 'l' or it gets messy) once you have turned over your tiles and start making your own grid of intersecting words. The moment you've created a grid using all your letters, shout 'Peel' (again the 'l' is vital here) and every player must take another tile, whether they have a complete grid or not. If you have a letter you just can't fit into your grid, you can shout 'Dump' and put it back into the pile - but you have to take three extra letters from the pile as a penalty. Play continues until there are fewer tiles left than there are players, and the victor (hopefully you) has a complete grid, with no bizarre words - which would disqualify you!

It's fast and furious and deeply addictive, and the neat zip-lock banana case makes it super-portable (great for airports, holidays and taking round to mates' houses). All in all Bananagrams is a high-speed adrenalin scrabble without the board or the maths, and it perks your brain up no end!

Brilliant game, very addictive, easy to pack for a holiday game.
Jacky G, Cheltenham

This game is great. Easy to get started but not so easy that you get bored. Players of different abilities can play against each other at the same time... so you always have someone to play against.
Peter N, Newent

I bought banagrams for my boyfriend for his christmas....and then for my brother for his birthday....and then for my friend for her wedding present!! this game is fantastic and amazingly addictive. buy it, buy it, but it.
Claire, Glasgow

I took this game skiing with me for a week. All 14 people in my group loved it! "Wow, did this game come with the Chalet?"....."This game is going to be massive!". I cannot recommend this game more highly for taking on holiday. A true classic (that has nothing to do with bananas - I might add)
Luke, London

Bananagrams came into my life just before Christmas and I can honestly say, hand on heart that my family played it every single day over the holiday period. So many people wanted to play that we had to mix in the scrabble letters! We even introduced a scoring system to whip up some 'friendly' family rivalry; you get one point for a six letter word, two for seven letters and so on. And if you cry 'Bananas!' when your game includes a misspelt or somewhat imaginary word, the offending letters and any words attached must be disassembled, leaving the cheater in alphabet chaos while other, more honest players can steam ahead and claim the Bananagram victory - with five added bonus points for winning. And if you are one of the unlucky souls who didn't manage to finish first, then you receive a minus point for every letter remaining. I haven't seen this many minus points since watching Alan Davies on QI. Anyway, this really is a great game; simple but smart and really weeds out the brainiacs from the lesser academically minded players or 'drama school luvvies' in our family's case. Bananagrams is also very addictive, so much so that my boyfriend no longer phones to ask me out for an evening, preferring to come round and challenge my dad in a round or two. So much for Valentines Day is all I can say!
Rosanna U, Church Stretton

I bought this for my mum for Christmas and over two days our whole family must have played it for about 4 hours in total! It is very simple, and everyone has a shot at winning because it is evenly chanced between your own intelligence and which letters you draw. It is also very fast-paced, which can lead to some hilarious moments of accidental dyslexia, complete misspellings and words that you are convinced are real but on consultation of the dictionary turn out not to exist after all. This game is very addictive and incredibly enjoyable. The tiles are really nice to handle and the banana-shaped fabric case it goes in means you can easily use it as a travel game.
Frankie H, Worthing

Such a good game because anyone can play, any age AND it is seriously addictive. Perhaps it should come with a health warning!
Karen, Burnley
