Ankh-Morpork, set in the largest city-state in Terry Pratchett's Discworld. Lord Vetinari has disappeared and different factions are trying to take control of the city. Each player has a secret personality with specific victory conditions, which means that you're not sure exactly what the other players need to do in order to win. The action takes place on a map of Ankh-Morpork, with players trying to place minions and buildings through card play. Each of the 132 cards is unique, and includes most of the famous characters that have appeared in the various books. The rules are relatively simple: Play a card and do what it says. Most cards have more than one action on them, and you can choose to do some or all of these actions. Some cards also allow you to play a second card, so you can chain actions.

Like monopoly meets poker!

This game is fantastic. At the very beginning, you each draw one of nine "personality" cards which give you your secret winning conditions, ranging from Vertinari (to win, make sure you have spies EVERYWHERE!) to Chrysophrase (make loads of money) to Sam Vimes (you win when you stop everyone else from winning!). Because these cards are secret, no-one knows exactly what the other players are trying to do to win, although you can try and guess when people suddenly seem to focus on building lots, or on planting trouble markers! Cue much double-bluffing, subterfuge and generally screwing each other over. This game is great for Terry Pratchett fans - it includes two decks of cards that you draw from each turn, and on most are Discworld characters or references that will have you cackling away. However, it's also good for people who aren't a fan. My boyfriend doesn't like Pratchett but he played it to humour me and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now he's the one nagging me to play it. When my friend, who has never read a book in her adult life, came around, she enjoyed the first game so much that once we were done she insisted on us playing it again straight away! Initially, the instructions if this game are a little intimidating and you aren't sure what's going on, but once you actually play you pick it up extremely quickly and it's WELL worth the effort. Best board game I have ever played.
