Geocaching for beginners

My first GPS unit, bought as a beginners device for use in Geocaching, as it should be more accurate than the GPS on my phone. The first thing I had to do was update the software, as the version "out of the box" is out of date. The new software however changed the amount of caches I could store from 500 to 1000, so a nice step up. I then deleted the 500 worldwide aches that come preloaded, and set about adding my own ones in, (an easy enough job once you have the communicator app on your PC), just click send to GPS in the caches page on geocaching.com. There's no manual in the box, (you have to download it from Magellan), but the system lends itself to ease of use, and I would recommend playing with it to get used to it and then reading the manual so you can then get the fine detail how you want it. Nice and easy to use in the field, it can be set to make a noise when near a cache, and the cache icon glows when you are near as well, so really handy for the hobby. The map orientation does take a bit of getting used to, but that could just be down to me and not having fully read the manual yet. The unit comes with a World Base Map, bu The absence of a touch-screen means you don't end up looking at somewhere else on the map by accident, but the little joystick interface is a bit finicky and may well put some people off. Battery life is fantastic, at over 18 hours on a single pair of AA batteries. I'm still on the original set and I've been out several days for over 8 hours a day. All in all, a great little unit for those wanting a decent GPS unit for not a lot of money.
