not the best netbook in the world

1

Disappointed with this item 1) If I place it near to a wireless device e.g. mouse, the mouse on the Ubiserver freezes up and I'm unable to do anything. It won't even shut down. It's still frozen if my wireless mouse or laptop is turned off. 2) When I connect to the internet via a wifi hotspot (in this case my router), web pages are unbearably slow to scroll up or down 3) When I enter the wifi address for my router, it is not saved for the next time, so I have to enter it every time - it isn't an easy thing to remember 4) If I go to the Ubisurfer item on the menu, there seems to be emails present as if someone has used it before me 5) The mouse pad it far too small (in depth) for ease of browsing

UbiSurfer

I've had it for about two weeks and I’m really thrilled with the UbiSurfer. It really is what a netbook should be. You can use it anywhere: At a friend’s house, in the CBD, or in your country home. No matter where you use it, it gives you a truly mobile experience. It runs just like your standard computer but the web races much faster than any 3G device I’ve used (including dongles). To top it off, you don’t need a 3G connection, (which you can’t get everywhere) as it offers excellent browsing speeds on a GPRS connection. Even more amazing is that internet comes free with the device, I rate it outstanding.

A wonderful mobile device

I'm a college student, so I mainly use the Ubisurfer for surfing the net, writing papers, and watching anime online (nerd that I am). It's very portable and attractive and runs like a charm. The keyboard is still fairly spacious, it has a great display but it is smaller than 90% of my textbooks. The way it has most affected me is that when I remember something that I forgot to look up, I can do it anywhere. On the campus lawn, taking lunch in the city, etc… I don’t have to wait until I get home or back to class and will likely forget about it. The speed is quite fast and I don't feel anything amiss with the GPRS connection. It definitely does make life easier. I highly recommended it for people on the go.

Ubisurfer: Ultimate mobile netbook

5

I am genuinely glad I bought the Ubisurfer. I’ve been surfing on it regularly for 10-12 days and it has really enhanced my mobile internet experience. I’ve made my train commutes useful again. The web works fast the whole way in from countryside to city center. It works exactly like any other computer but on the internet, it races to sites faster than my now ex-3G dongle. I also don’t have to worry about the dongle bills any more. My same usage this past week would have cost me tens if not 100 Quid. This is a stunning piece of equipment and I highly recommend it.

Waste of Money!

I brought this item so I could use the internet while on holiday as it advertises "works almost anywhere", yet I could not pick up a signal where I was! Ok I would understand if I was in the jungle or the middle of the Sahara Dessert, but I was in a city and had excellent reception on my mobile phone. I did manage to connect via the Wifi network at my hotel, but it ran very slowly and found the same connection through my iPod to be much faster and overall better. There is something seriously wrong when a device built for a specific purpose is greatly outshined by an mp3 player the size of your hand. The overall running speed of this product is dead slow, and seems to struggle to open even a blank word document, the time delay between telling it to do something or typing on the keyboard and it responding is ridiculous, I was often left wondering if it had crashed, which it did on a regular basis. I managed to connect to the GPRS internet in the UK, but this was also hard to use, even simple web pages took a long time to load, some graphics were displayed with a low-colour pallet and I found some pages would refuse to scroll down beyond a certain point, even if it contained only text. I wouldn’t even attempt to load anything on this device, with the way it has so much difficulty just loading the basics, I really don’t think it could cope. If you put a wireless pickup in a 10 year old laptop it will be much better than this. My advice: save your money and buy something better or get an iPod with Wifi connectivity for around the same price. A complete waste on money. Wholly unsatisfied.

Does what it says...just

If you are looking for internet connectivity and want a decent size screen but aren't too worried about speed then this maybe the gadget for you. It's small, light and the screen and keyboard aren't bad at all. Internet connectivity is via two separate browsers - one for WIFI and one for GPRS over the vodafone mobile phone network (so coverage is good). If you are looking for a fast machine or a windows like interface then go elsewhere. If it wasn't for the CPU load monitor showing you what was going on (in the toolbar by default) you could be forgiven for thinking the machine was frozen or you hadn't clicked a button but it gets there eventually. The additional software is poor at best when compared with Mac/PC rivals but think about what you are paying. Personally I'd rather just have a really good spreadsheet or word processor than a host of mediocre software. I found setup simple and uploading patches equally trivial. There are glitches but all seem work aroundable so far so no complaints there. If the people making this machine actually used it, I'm sure so many of the issues are fixable. As for Linux, I don't think this implementation does it any favours. It's crude at best and I'll stick with my Mac for core work. So why buy it? Well I was looking for a cheap method of getting to the internet whilst in the car and maybe working with a few spreadsheets. It can do both but at such slow speeds I'm not sure I could recommend it - but it does work.

Much anticipated - but it went straight back.

Oh, what a let down. The concept is fantastic, but the Ubisurfer didn't work properly. IWOOT were great, and we got a swift trouble-free refund.

Didn't work for me

1

I bought this thinking it was like a notebook. I wanted to use it instead of taking my 15 inch laptop everywhere with me. First off the menu's didn't come up or look like the one's shown in the quick start guide, i contacted the manufacturers & they pointed me towards their site where there was some updates, Downloaded following thier instructions STILL doest look or work like it should. I connected my External hard drive up to view photo's i wanted to look at, Couldn't!! when i figured out how after an hour of frustration i could only see the photo one by one after it took forever to load them, no side show menu. Sound can't get that to word & sound menu doesn't look like the one show in instructions. Internet worked for a bit but now can't get it to work. Completely Dissatisfied with it & couldn't return it as stated if used no return so £150 out of pocket & pile of junk sat in my loft now.

Ubisurfer rocks

Once I worked out how to access wifi I was able to use much more frequently than with the 'free' sim card as this limited the usage each month. BUT it's good quality, runs well and does what it says on the tin. Definitely would recommend as backup to PC/laptop.
