It's all very well hacking through Amazonian jungles, mud-wrestling with crocodiles and flossing with razor wire but, let's face it, life can get rather tame without a little light entertainment. So here's a torch-cum-radio that'll do the business anywhere. Even adventurers need to turn on, tune in and drop out occasionally (don't try this if you're sitting in a tall tree), and this is the ultimate bit of kit for survivalists who like to take a touch of civilisation with their rough.
Whatever it is on the radio that yanks your crank, this hand-powered gizmo can deliver it, running the gamut of frequencies from AM to FM. For environmentalists there's no need for batteries, the splash-proof radio/torch runs off a self-powered dynamo generator, which charges the rechargeable battery pack. We've had our stopwatches out, and if you turn the crank in a clockwise direction for at least 90 seconds at two turns per second to charge the battery pack, this will equate to about 20 minutes airplay on the radio at medium volume. Pump harder to pump up the volume. Simple, really. If you just want to save the winding for emergencies, it can also run off standard AAA batteries.
