With one of the lead characters being called Legolas, it was surely inevitable that LEGO would start to produce Lord of the Rings related sets. Until they bring out a Minas Tirith model, this LEGO Lord of The Rings: The Battle of Helm's Deep is the top of the range set, and what a set it is! It depicts the fortress of Helm's Deep, with gatehouse, horn tower and deeping wall, and can even be extended with the Uruk Hai set. With 8 minifigures, this is a great way to re-enact the battle from the Two Towers book/movie in mini-brick form. As usual with Lego, the contents are packaged into a number of individual bags with the instructions taking you expertly step-by-step through each bag. The instructions are highly detailed and specific, and as usual, there are never any pieces missing, with even a few spares of the smaller bits. Everything goes together beautifully, as you would expect from LEGO. And the imagination employed by Lego designers is immense. The range of unique pieces and the way they fit together shows a lot of time and effort has gone into the design of these models. For the play-value, once constructed there are the working doors, a catapult, opening shields above the door way, and another catapult to launch Gimli into the attackers. But best of all, the recreation of the deeping wall. Let your little Uruk-Hai Berserker position the bomb, flick the lever, and the walls crumble just like in the movie! Overall, this is an excellent set that's full of detail. And at IWOOT prices, it represents really good value for money. Go on, treat yourself!
