Funambulism (the technical word for tightrope walking - we just like writing it) has been around in many forms for centuries. Slackline has expanded upon the original (art, sport, practice? Answers on a postcard please) by using the flat Nylon webbing commonly used in mountaineering. The fundamental difference between slackin' and tightrope walking is that the slackline isn't rigidly taut creating a dynamic and versatile line that can be bounced upon and, more importantly, the flat surface area makes it a lot easier to maintain your balance.
The good news is that the learning curve for Slacklining isn't as steep as you'd think. Slackline.org.uk estimate that it should take a first time user about an hour to gain enough confidence to keep their balance - though you may need to spread this over a couple of days, and quite possibly yourself over a mattress. The bad news is that slackin' is highly addictive, so once you've set it up in your garden you may find yourself cancelling important meetings, neglecting the housework or even pulling a sicky just so you can practice your new found skill.
There are a number of tricks to learn once you've finally mastered walking on the Slackline and much like skateboarding there's a wealth of resources, forums and youtube videos dedicated to the constantly evolving sport, so there's always something new to learn.
Since it's inception in Yosemite Park in the 80s, Slacklining has fast become an underground sensation (though of course ideally you don't do it underground). It's basically tight-roping for the young at heart that you can do in the relative safety of your own home - as opposed to across a raging waterfall. Our Slackline Kits are ideal for beginners and seasoned slackers alike, and will provide you with everything you need to set up a Slackline in your garden, local park or anywhere else you fancy slackin' over. All you need is two fixed points of equal height that can withstand a load of up to 1000kg - so a couple of healthy trees should do the trick*.
