Polarity is a game of extremes, polar extremes to be exact. Now we never expected physics and fun to be one of the same but Polarity is here to prove us wrong. The game and its success relies upon the understanding of magnetic fields, dull though that may sound it's anything but, and is immensely challenging and competitive.
The game uses a canvas mat depicting a large circle as its 'playing board' which must be laid out flat, and the red magnet should be flipped and placed in the middle. Each team (suitable for 2 or 4 players) has a stack of magnets, one side of them is black and one is white. The black and white teams then take it in turns to place 5 magnets (with your colour up) within the canvas circle. Once all of these have been placed, they become known as 'Foundation Discs'.
On the players' next turns they use their 'Action Discs' (the remaining discs in their stack) to create 'Leaners'. These are discs that must float on the Foundation Disc's magnetic field. It sounds pretty easy but is really fiddly. If by mistake the magnets snap together you must then take the magnets back into your stash of Action Discs. As Polarity's objective is to get rid of all your discs, you can see the predicament. Faults like this occur pretty often as a novice (oh the appliance of science), and lead to all sorts of advantageous situations for your opponent. The Action Disc that has led to the fault either returns to the un-played stack, or in the case of the opponents Leaner being flipped over to your colour you then 'capture' their disc. Capturing may also occur if the opponents' discs snap together on the mat.
If you have caused a Fault, before your opponent takes their bonafide turn an attempt to capture the Fault must take place. This is done by grabbing one of the discs from the Fault and lifting it off the mat so that the other discs in the Fault snap up and form a tower in your hand. This Tower is then placed wherever you so choose on the mat.
The game concludes when one player has got rid of all their discs. To determine the winner you count the number of discs that each player has in Tower format and then subtract however many discs remain in your stack (if you didn't get rid of yours first). Like any set of rules for any game, they seem tremendously more complicated when written down, and the game itself is actually easy and huge fun to play. Polarity is a compelling game and its attraction is truly magnetic - in more ways than one.
