It's not often that an excellent game gets a re-design and becomes even more brilliant, normally the opposite is true. Well the sequel to the superb strategic and award-winning game Cathedral is called Monumental Moves, and it rocks. If you're familiar with Cathedral then the play is exactly the same, but on a far larger scale and with way cooler pieces. For the uninitiated, imagine a kind of 3D cultural tetris, if you can without stimulants. Each player takes it in turn to place one of their 14 pieces onto the board, as the pieces mount up it becomes harder and harder to find a space, and the challenge is to get your pieces in whilst attempting to block your opponents. The pieces all have varied "footprints", some just a single square in size, and others are far larger and more complicated. Each piece depicts a famous place, building or monument from around the world, and it's almost as much fun trying to work out what they are and where they're from, as it is playing the game.
The board itself is bordered by the Great Wall of China, the West Wailing Wall, the Wall of Marrakesh and the Zimbabwe Ruins, and the pieces include such iconic monuments as the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, The Sydney Opera House and the Houses of Parliament, even the wonders of the world such as the Taj Mahal and Ankor Wat. It's a truly global strategy game that's great fun and immensely addictive.
