The Emperor has no clothes...
I know that Catan is a very popular board game and it deserves the respect of every board gamer (unless Monopoly...) - it made board games "in" and has brought thousands of people to play board games again... But... But I don't think that it's such a good game. It starts good, but after a few turns it becomes very slow, turns can go on without doing anything if you rolled a bad dice, etc. The interaction between the players is fine, nothing to aggressive, quite friendly actually. It's definitely NOT a bad board game, but it's nothing special, there are much better getaway board games.
