Years of teen angst slavishly devoted to making the ultimate compilations of all time on countless Memorex C-90s, - they were what Saturday and Sunday afternoons were for back in the '70s and 80's. All that effort sadly went to waste with the advent of CDs and then MP3s, and for years now those treasured cassettes have sat in drawers, un-played, love and sweat shot down by technology. Well now at last they can be re-born, and you can re-incarnate all those tragic monuments to lost loves, and the best mod rock collection ever, with the Instant Music Vinyl & Cassette Ripper. Not a very slick name, but a very slick piece of equipment.
Dust off your old cassette deck and polish up your record player, they have one final task before they die. Simply plug this bit of kit into your PC or Mac and hook up your old kit to the Ripper (it comes with all the combinations of cable you could need to connect your dinosaur hi-fi to the unit). Using your computer's USB port, the Instant Music ripper starts recording from the analog audio source onto digital audio formats WAV, WMA and AAC. So your 70s classics and homemade compilations can be made into shiny CDs and added to your playlists, you can even use the included Nero software for filtering out sound imperfections and restoring your favourite tunes of old. Use the LP or Cassette to Audio CD Wizards in the included Nero SoundTrax software to go from LP to CD audio in 4 simple steps; recording, track detection, noise reduction and burning the CD. Re-live your youth without all the agonizing peer pressure and standing in the kitchen at parties. Nostalgia is what used to be.
Pre-Amp required for Phono Audio or Turntable.

Revival of classics
Very good product to be able to listen again to old recordings, easy to install and to use, with all the cables included. The software included is very easy to use as well, but it doesn't fully eliminate the gaps between tracks, so it didn't work as I expected for my mixed tracks.

Highly recommended
I still have a large collection of vinyl and a record player, but I also listen to a lot of my music on an mp3 player and in my car. This does exactly what it says it will do and is quick and easy to set up. Small amount of fiddling with the computer settings to ensure the right mic is picking up your record player's output but a reasonable wizard in the software helps you get it right and test to ensure levels are correct. Now the only problem is finding time to convert all my favourite oldies to digital!

Not quite what I'd imagined
This looked to be perfect for me, but it didn't quite live up to the promise. Firstly, it was sold as being for the Mac, but only came with PC software (though the supplier does have a Mac version). It works fine with GarageBand, but I don't have the benefit of audio tools that should have come with it. Secondly, there is no way to alter the input volume in the Mac audio driver. When I connected it to standard phono audio out connections on my amplifier, the result was horribly distorted. I have had to connect it to the headphone output, which rather defeats the object of the ripper giving phono inputs. I hope with some fiddling I can get improvements, but first impressions are not brilliant.

Incorrect software
The delivery of my instant music vinyl and cassette ripper was very quick and the item well packaged. I had requested a Mac version of the software for Quicktime but the software that came with the item was for a pc. However I had to open the packaging to find out that the software wasn't right as the box said it was suitable for a mac! I don't suppose I'll be able to return it now as it has been opened.

Not so good
I bought the sound digitising gadget Instant Music, and am not happy. The softrware that comes with it seems poor. I was recording a 45-min long side of a tape cassette, and it stopped after 30 min, with the message that if I wanted to keep recording, I should press the record button. By the time I saw this, it was too late. I must add that it was set to record for 90 min, the default. I have emailed the company that makes the gadget, but not a sausage. I do not recommend this thing.

Great bit of kit
I'm a technophobe and even I found this gadget easy to use and it actually does what it says on the pack!! I'm no spring chicken - a borderline idiot - so it takes a lot to impress me. This did.
