Over the years we've had the pleasure of testing a number of portable speakers designed especially for MP3 players, so when the Spring Speaker arrived we weren't expecting to have our socks blown off. Then we plugged it in. When we finally found our socks again we just couldn't believe our ears. The bass on these little devils beggars belief, and we're pretty sure it has everything to do with the spring that connects the two speakers together.

The design of the speaker is simple enough - 2 speakers connected together and an input to plug in your MP3 player (or walkman if you're in a retro mood). Twist the speakers anti-clockwise though and the spring will push them apart, leaving a concertina like chamber between the two speakers. This is where the magic happens - suddenly your tunes go from sounding just "ok" to "wow, that's quite impressive considering its size - I wonder if it's the spring that makes the difference?"

Now, this won't change your life, make you popular nor will it replace your stereo at home - but as travel speakers go you would be hard pushed to find any that match the sound quality of the Spring Speaker. It has a built in rechargeable battery which can be charged via USB and a full charge lasts about four hours, so while you're on your travels you don't need to worry about filling up the landfills with your spent batteries.

Spring into the future with the Spring Speaker.

Nifty, compact, decent sound, charge up swiftly - ideal for the office. Now I can share the darker depths of my music collection with anyone stupid enough to come visit me .....
