If you think that telling the time on a conventional clock is just too easy for you to be bothered with, then you need to get yourself one of these Pop Quiz Clocks. Rather than your usual 1-12 numbers (how boring is that?), the Pop Quiz Clocks have a different complex sum that tells you which number is which. For example, the number 8 on the clock face is represented by the square root of 64 - don't tell us you can't work it out.

They are also available in two different styles. You can opt for the blackboard version (made to resemble an old fashioned blackboard to compliment the educational atmosphere, we don't doubt) or the graph paper version. Both are surprisingly realistic and so evocative of school days that you'd be forgiven for feeling an ache in your knuckles where 'teach' reprimanded you with a wooden ruler.

You might think that this sort of thing is solely the preserve of nerds and people who want to show off about how clever they are, but once you start to work some of them out it's actually quite fun. Attractively designed, the Pop Quiz Clocks are not just for the smarty pants out there, they're fun items for any home.

  • The Pop Quiz Clocks feature equations instead of the traditional numbers display.
  • Available in either graph paper or blackboard styles.
  • Work out the answers to each equation to be left with the correct time.
  • Requires 1 x AA battery (not included).
  • Suitable for ages 8 years + (although 8 year olds will not be expected to answer all equations correctly).

Size:-

  • 11.5" in diameter.

Nice Clock, Poor maths

This novelty clock tempted the geek inside, however on closer inspection I found that the equations and small problems used to describe the numbers were in fact incorrect, mathematically. I appreciated the idea, but I would expect a better standard of mathematics on the clock if I were to keep it on my wall. For example the Square root of 4 can be 2 or -2, and we have discarded -2 for no apparent reason. The same applies to root 64. And for our 9, we have assumed Pi to be only 3.14 whereas in reality Pi is closer to 3.14159265359.... and continues on. Thus 3(Pi - .14) is 9.00477796... As well as this the .14 should be 0.14. All maths aside, this is a nifty little clock, which works well and provides amusement for visitors; however for those inclined towards mathematics, the blunders were near offensive. If the maths were edited to be correct, this clock would be my favourite time-keeping method.
