Qar has always provided a rich seam of inspiration for film-makers, but the advert of World War II lent a patriotic imperative to the genre and brought an even greater number of war movies to the screen on both sides of the Atlantic. From the battle for the skies to struggles on the home front and in the desert, to all aspects of the conflict and its effect on human relationships. These classic war films contain tales of survival, heroism and endurance against all odds.

Cross of Iron:
James Mason and James Coburn star in this gripping account of a doomed German platoon facing annihilation at Russian hands during 1943, who discover that their instinct for war is greater than their instinct for survival. While the enemy attack, two officers fuel the conflict with their hell-bent lust for personal vindictiveness and glory - all part of the grater absurdity called war. Directed by Sam Peckinpah, Cross of Iron is his only ever war film, in true Peckinpah, Cross of Iron is his only ever war film, in true Peckinpah style proves to be disturbing, yet totally compelling.

The Wooden Horse:
Imprisoned in the notorious German prisoner-of-war camp Stalag Luft III, two prisoners attempt to escape by tunnelling under the camp fence. Phil Row takes charge above ground whilst they are digging and, in return is promised a chance to escape with them.

They Who Dare:
Lieutenant Graham of the special boat service leads a raiding party to Rhodes. Their mission is to blow up the Aegean airfields from which enemy bombers are hampering Allied lines of communication in Africa. Dirk Bogarde and Denholm Elliott star in this gripping war action story set in World War II.
