The police are after Jack Barrett. He has stolen several thousand pounds to pay off a blackmailer and is now on the run. He tries desperately to get in touch with Melville Farr, a prosperous young barrister with a beautiful wife but, cornered and arrested by the police he commits suicide in his prison cell rather than answer the probing questions that are put to him. Mel's wife Laura presses him about Barrett's death and is appalled to learn that the men were both lovers. She leaves Mel, not because of his infidelity but because she knows that Mel still loves the dead man.
