Every morning Harris Telemacher (Steve Martin) announces the 'wacky weather' for a local Californian news programme. But outside the studio his life is a mess. Lost in the shallow, image conscious world of Los Angeles, Harris feels his life has no meaning or magic. His vacuous girlfriend is cheating on him, he's about to embark on an affair with a blonde shop assistant half his age and the woman he really wants to be with seems out of his league and out of reach. But Harris's life is about to take a surreal turn. Driving home one night Harris suddenly comes across a philosophising road sign on the L.A freeway that wants to help him find direction within his life
