The Hotel New Hampshire takes a look at quirky Americana and
the ultimate dysfunctional family.
The Berrys are headed by patriarch Mr. Win Berry (Beau Bridges), who has never
been a successful man but has always been an entrepreneur at heart. With his wife
(Lisa Banes), he has a created a large family with many children,
none of whom are the least bit normal.
John (Rob Lowe) is the athletic football player and womanizer with a deep-rooted
desire for his own sister Frannie (Jodie Foster), a victim of a gang rape, now morbidly
fascinated by one of the rapists, and equally attracted to her brother with incestuous
desire. Frank (Paul McCrane) is their gay younger brother; and Lilly (Jennifer
Dundas) is the little sister who blossoms into a famous author. Associated with the
family is Suzie the Bear (Nastassja Kinski) who is not secure enough to come out of
her bear suit. A friend of the family, Freud (Wallace Shawn), who has been blinded
by the Nazis, runs the Hotel New Hampshire in Vienna. In need of help, he asks the
family to come to his aid...
Fireworks ensue in this outrageous adult fairy tale directed by Tony Richardson
(Look Back in Anger, The Charge of the Light Brigade) and based on a novel by
John Irving, writer of The Cider House Rules and The World According to Garp.
