It’s hard to admit, but winter is finally upon us. The evenings are cooler and darker, and unfortunately there’s not much we can do about it; not even the brilliant inventors at IWOOT.com have managed to build a time machine…yet.
Now, although we all love a Saturday evening, sat in watching a classic film, snuggled up under a blanket – we’ve been thinking about how we can make winter evenings at home a little more exciting. Dinner dates, game nights, bake off competitions and movie themed evenings were among our favourites, with a particular stand-out suggestion made by our film and series fanatic, Tom.
“Imagine”, he said excitedly, “a stylish, Mad Men themed evening with retro gadgets, sophisticated refreshments and classy characters “. As an added bonus, it even involves time travel…well, kind of.
So we’ve teamed up with Reiss, to get you suited up to travel back to the 1960’s and shake-up your Saturday nights this winter.
So what do you need?
1. Set the scene
A few alterations to your dining room or living room can completely transform the atmosphere.
Invite your guests into a themed space as soon as they enter the room. Use a smartphone projector to play clips of the series in an old fashioned cinematic style, with the retro effect of 1960’s technology. Alongside this, make a playlist and use an iPod dock to make your room ooze 1960’s America, with songs such as :
The Spencer Davis Group – “I’m a Man”, Sidney Bechet – “Petite Fleur”, Frank Sinatra – “My Way”, The Zombies -“This Will be Our Year”, Robert Morse – “The Best Things in Life are Free”.
Now you’ve added to the audio atmosphere of the room, make sure you pay attention to the visual.
Hang dramatic lampshades in place of any plain, nude lighting. This will create a strong, but mellow New York bar effect, perfect for your Mad Men theme. For added effect, feature other bold decorations in your room, such as the Newgate clock above – after all, nothing in Mad Men is done halfheartedly.
Finally, you can’t be Don Draper without an ‘Old Fashioned’ in hand. So mix up some whiskey, sugar bitters and a lemon peel (or a non-alcoholic equivalent, such as an apple mock-tail) and serve in our elegant whiskey rockers for a smart finish to your look.
2. Look the part
Despite being a modern, global fashion brand, Reiss maintain traditional trends with a contemporary spin, perfect for a 21st century Mad Men themed event. So browse our outfit combinations below, so all you Don and Betty Draper’s out there can perfect your Mad Men esque look this festive season.
